This is a study of the effectiveness of VDW (Vibration During Welding) inaccurately referred to as VSR (Vibratory Stress Relief) on residual stresses. Although some reduction in longitudinal residual stresses were achieved, transverse residual stresses either increased or decreased, based on the amplitude of vibration. The greatest increases in stress caused by vibration were near the toe of the welds. Welding distortion, the most common use of VDW, was not discussed or tested.
